Paid group terms
Paid groups, for creators and members.
A paid group is a members-only channel or group on playbakk that a creator charges a monthly price for. These terms apply to creators who sell memberships and to members who buy them, alongside our app terms.
Who can buy. Members must be 18 or over with a billing address in the United Kingdom. We will open other countries later and update these terms first.
The short version
- The creator is the seller. Your contract for the membership is with them.
- You pay through Stripe, straight into the creator's own Stripe account. playbakk never holds your money and never sees your card details.
- Memberships renew monthly until you cancel. You can cancel future renewals at any time, online, in a few steps.
- Within 14 days of joining you can cancel at once and get back the part of the price for the days left.
- Paid groups are for adults on both sides, and must not offer adult content, betting tips or trading signals.
Who does what
- The creator sells the membership, decides what it includes and what it costs, provides the content and is responsible for it.
- The member buys the membership for their own personal use.
- playbakk provides the software: the members-only channel or group, sign-up, access control, the 14-day cancellation, and moderation. We are not a party to the sale between creator and member, but these terms bind all of us, and we act for the creator in the ways described here (for example, issuing the refunds listed under "For creators").
- Stripe processes payments for the creator, on the creator's own Stripe account, under the creator's agreement with Stripe.
What a membership includes is what the creator describes on its page. Unless the creator says so, a membership does not give you access to message or call the creator.
Privacy inside a paid group. Posts in a members-only channel are not end-to-end encrypted: playbakk can see them, which is how we moderate them. Messages in a members-only group chat are encrypted between members' devices, and we see them only if someone reports them.
For creators: getting set up
- You must be 18 or over and able to open a Stripe account in the UK, the US or an EU/EEA country. The country you choose in the app must be where your Stripe account is, and it fixes your currency (pounds, US dollars or euros).
- When you create a paid group you choose what it is about. Trading or investment signals, betting tips and adult content are refused.
- Before you start, you confirm in the app that you are 18 or over and that you accept these terms. We record when you did and which version you accepted.
- You set up payments through Stripe-hosted onboarding, which opens a Stripe account in your name with access to the full Stripe Dashboard. Stripe verifies your identity and may ask for more information at any time. You cannot sell until Stripe has enabled payments on your account.
- Payment processing services for creators on playbakk are provided by Stripe and are subject to the Stripe Connected Account Agreement, which includes the Stripe Terms of Service (together, the "Stripe Services Agreement"). By agreeing to these terms or continuing to sell memberships on playbakk, you agree to be bound by the Stripe Services Agreement, as Stripe may modify it from time to time. As a condition of playbakk enabling payment processing services through Stripe, you agree to provide playbakk accurate and complete information about you and your business, and you authorise playbakk to share it and transaction information related to your use of the payment processing services provided by Stripe.
- In your Stripe Dashboard, before members can join, you must set your terms of service link to https://playbakk.com/terms/memberships and your privacy policy link to https://playbakk.com/privacy/app (Settings → Public details), and keep Stripe's customer emails for successful payments, refunds and failed card payments switched on. Those emails are your members' receipts. The app lists these steps.
For creators: you are the seller
- Describe it honestly. Say clearly what members get and roughly how often, and keep the description up to date.
- Deliver it. If you stop providing what you described, members are entitled to a remedy under consumer law, which can include a refund.
- Your content, your responsibility. You must own or have permission for everything you post, and follow the content rules below, the acceptable use policy and the community guidelines.
- Price. You set a monthly price in your currency within the range playbakk allows. A new price applies to new members only. If you change an existing member's price in your Stripe Dashboard, you must give them at least 30 days' notice first, and they can cancel before it applies.
- Pause sales. You can pause sales at any time: nobody new can join, and existing members keep their membership until they cancel. We can also pause sales on a paid group while we look into a report.
- Refunds. You may offer refunds beyond what these terms require, but never less. You authorise playbakk to issue these refunds from your Stripe account: 14-day cancellations; payments from members whose billing address is outside the countries we sell to, which we refund in full at once; the unused part of the month when we take a paid group down or when you close your playbakk account; and any payment collected after a membership already ended. You deal with every other refund, and every dispute, in your Stripe Dashboard.
- Stripe's fees and losses. Stripe charges its own fees, including dispute fees, to your Stripe account. Refunds and lost disputes come out of your Stripe balance. Under your agreement with Stripe you are responsible for them, including any negative balance; playbakk does not cover them.
- Tax. You are responsible for registering for, charging and paying the taxes due on your sales, such as VAT, and for keeping your own records. You can set up Stripe Tax in your Stripe Dashboard and then switch it on in the app; Stripe then adds the tax it calculates at checkout, and you remain responsible for the result. UK VAT law can treat a platform as the supplier of digital services sold through it. If that applies to memberships, we will tell you before it changes how prices, receipts or payouts work.
- Stopping or closing. If you plan to stop providing a paid group or to cut what it includes substantially, tell members at least 30 days before. If you close your playbakk account, every membership you sold ends at once and each member gets back the unused part of their current month from your Stripe account.
- Members' information. Stripe holds members' billing details in your Stripe account, and you are responsible for that information as its controller. Use it only to run the paid group and meet your legal obligations, keep it secure, and do not send members marketing unless they have agreed to receive it.
For creators: playbakk's fee and payouts
- playbakk charges a platform fee of 8% of each membership payment. Founding creators pay 5% for their first 12 months; the app tells you if you are one. We will give you at least 30 days' notice before changing the fee.
- Stripe deducts the fee from each payment as an application fee and pays it to playbakk. Stripe also charges you its own processing fees under your agreement with Stripe.
- Whenever a payment is refunded, by us or by you in your Stripe Dashboard, playbakk returns the same share of its fee automatically. When a member wins a dispute (chargeback), playbakk returns all of its fee on that payment; Stripe may still charge you a dispute fee.
- Stripe pays out your balance to your bank account on the schedule you set with Stripe. playbakk cannot hold, speed up or redirect your payouts.
For members: joining
- You must be 18 or over and have a billing address in the United Kingdom. Stripe asks for your billing address. If it is anywhere else, or missing, the membership is cancelled straight away and your payment is refunded in full.
- The price is shown before you pay. If it is not in pounds, your card issuer converts it at its own rate.
- You pay on a Stripe-hosted checkout page in the creator's name, and the charge appears on your statement under the creator's name.
- Your membership starts when payment succeeds and renews every month at the price you agreed, until you or the creator cancels. Stripe emails you a receipt for each payment on the creator's behalf.
- Memberships in the app shows your renewal date and keeps a record of what you agreed to at checkout, with the date, time and terms version.
For members: cancelling
Cancel future renewals any time from the membership in the app (Manage), which opens Stripe's billing portal. It takes a few steps and no phone call or email. If you cancel, you are not charged again. You keep access until the end of the month you have paid for, unless you use your 14-day right below. If you cannot reach the app, email hello@playbakk.com from the address you used at checkout, or tell the creator, and we will make sure it is cancelled.
For members: your 14-day right to cancel
You can cancel a new membership within 14 days of the day it started, without giving a reason.
Because a membership gives you access straight away, the checkout page asks you to tick a box next to this statement:
"I agree to the membership terms. I want my membership to start now. I understand that I lose my right to cancel for what has already been supplied: if I cancel within 14 days I get back only the part of the price for the days left. My membership renews every month at the price shown until I cancel, and I can cancel future renewals online at any time. Memberships are available to members in the UK."
To cancel within the 14 days, use Cancel within 14 days on the membership in the app, or email hello@playbakk.com with a clear statement that you are cancelling. Your access ends when you cancel, and nothing more is charged. You get back the part of the price for the days left in the month you paid for, to your original payment method: at once if you use the app, or within 14 days of your email. If we did not record your confirmation at checkout, you get everything back. The refund comes from the creator's Stripe account; we issue it for them.
For members: payments, problems and refunds
- Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, Stripe tries again, and Memberships in the app shows that the payment failed; use Manage to update your card. Your access continues for up to 3 days after the month you paid for. If the payment still has not gone through by then, the membership ends, the unpaid renewal is cancelled, and you are not charged for any time after it ended.
- Something wrong? If a membership is not as described, or the creator stops providing it, tell the creator and us at hello@playbakk.com. Under consumer law you may be entitled to a price reduction or refund, which the creator gives from their Stripe account. If a creator breaks these terms, we can take the paid group down, which ends every membership and refunds the unused part of your month.
- Charged twice? You can hold only one membership per paid group at a time. If you are charged twice for the same month, tell us and the creator: the duplicate must be refunded in full.
- Chargebacks. Please contact us first: it is usually quicker. If you dispute a payment with your bank, the membership ends when the dispute is opened. Your right to ask your bank for a chargeback is not affected.
- Outside these cases, a month that has started is not refunded, but you keep access until it ends. Nothing in these terms affects your statutory rights.
Who holds the money
Membership payments are charged directly on the creator's Stripe account. playbakk never receives, holds or controls members' money: we receive only our fee, which Stripe deducts and pays to us. We never see or store your full card details. Stripe, a regulated payment provider, provides the payment services; playbakk provides the software around them.
Paying by bank or app transfer
Paying a creator by bank or app transfer instead of by card is not available yet. Before it is, these terms will be updated to explain how it works.
What a paid group must not sell
On top of the acceptable use policy and the community guidelines, a paid group must not include or sell:
- adult or sexually explicit content, nudity intended for sexual gratification, or sexual services of any kind;
- any content that sexualises, exploits or endangers children, or anything aimed at under-18s;
- betting or gambling tips, lotteries or prize draws;
- trading or investment signals, financial promotions or regulated financial advice;
- medical treatment, diagnosis or prescriptions, or claims that a product cures or treats illness;
- weapons, drugs, counterfeit goods, hacking tools, or anything else illegal where you or your members are;
- content you do not have the rights to, including other people's paid content, or private messages and recordings shared without consent;
- pyramid or multi-level schemes, "get rich" schemes, or anything designed to mislead members;
- anything Stripe does not allow on its services.
Takedowns, closed accounts and appeals
- Content removed. If a person on our team removes a post or a paid group, the creator gets a statement of reasons in the app: what we did, the reason, and how to appeal.
- Paid group taken down. If we take down a paid group because the creator broke these terms or the law requires it, every membership ends at once, nobody is charged again, and each member gets back the unused part of their current month from the creator's Stripe account. Members are told in the app.
- Accounts closed. If a creator closes their playbakk account, the memberships they sold end in the same way. If a member closes theirs, the memberships they bought are cancelled at once and not charged again; to get money back within the first 14 days, use Cancel within 14 days before closing the account.
- To appeal, or to complain about a paid group, use the reports and complaints page.
Changes
We will give at least 30 days' notice of changes to these terms that affect an existing membership, and you can cancel before they apply. Questions: hello@playbakk.com. For anything legal: legal@playbakk.com.
