Record a clean clip with playbakk Room

Why a call built for clips helps

Most ways of turning a conversation into a clip start from a recording of the whole call. You then spend time cropping out the other person, fighting a soft self-view picture and cutting around their questions. If the call happened in an app that does not record, you may not have a usable file at all.

playbakk Room turns that around. Each person records only their own side, on their own device, at the quality of their own camera. There is nothing of the other person’s picture to remove, because it was never recorded. What remains is to cut your answers into a clip, which Studio does with a speech timeline the Room keeps while you talk.

Before the call

A few minutes of preparation makes the biggest difference to the result:

• Use a current browser on a computer or phone. On iPhone and iPad, use Safari.
• Wear headphones, even simple wired earphones. Without them your microphone hears the other person through your speakers, and their voice can end up in your clip.
• Sit facing a window or a soft light, with the camera at eye level. Your camera, not the call, sets the quality of your clip.
• Close other apps that might hold the camera, such as another call app.
• Think about the format you want. A 9:16 reel needs your head and shoulders near the middle of the frame, with some room above.

Start a call and share the link

1. Open playbakk Room and choose Start a call. Type the name you want the other person to see.
2. Allow the camera and microphone when your browser asks. Check the preview and the sound meter, and answer whether you are wearing headphones.
3. Copy the invite link or send it on WhatsApp. The other person opens it in a browser on their computer or phone, makes the same quick check and joins. Neither of you needs an app or an account.

The call connects peer-to-peer, directly between the two browsers, with standard WebRTC encryption. If your networks do not allow a direct route, the Room falls back to an encrypted relay that forwards the media without being able to read it. If the call will not connect at all, try another network, such as your phone’s hotspot.

Record your side

When you are ready, tell the other person you are recording your side, then press Record my side. Your device records only your own camera and microphone. The other person sees a “recording their side” indicator, and if they record their own side you will see the same. Recording is limited to 30 minutes at a time, so for a long conversation record the part you plan to use.

While you talk, keep an eye on two things. The connection panel shows the route, round-trip time, packet loss and their video quality. The “their voice in your mic” meter estimates how much of the other person is reaching your microphone. If it rises, put headphones on or turn your speakers down. It is a measurement, not a guarantee, which is why the final check below still matters.

Cut your clip in playbakk Studio

When you stop recording, Studio opens with a timeline showing when you spoke, when the other person spoke and what will be kept.

1. Trim the start and end so the clip opens on a strong sentence.
2. Choose a format: 9:16 for reels and stories, 4:5 for feed posts, 1:1 square or 16:9 landscape.
3. Turn on the Just-me cut. It uses the speech timeline to remove the other person’s turns and long pauses, so your answers play as one take.
4. Preview the result. Turn on Export without sound if you want to add music or a voice-over elsewhere.
5. Export the clip. It is created on your device as MP4 where your browser supports it, otherwise WebM. You can also download the full recording.

Nothing is uploaded at any point. During the beta, the Room logs connection-quality and export metrics, such as whether an export succeeded, to help improve it. It never sends video, audio or what you said.

Check it before you post

Watch and listen to the whole clip once before sharing it. Listen especially for the other person’s voice in the gaps: if you were not wearing headphones, some of it can remain. Check the background for anything private, and open the file in the app you plan to post to, since some apps prefer MP4 over WebM.
